Hurricane Preparation
There are three basic steps to follow when preparing for a hurricane evacuation:
1. Formulate a hurricane evacuation plan for you and your family.
Know ahead of time where you will go if your local government calls for an evacuation. Be sure to identify at least 3 different places where you would be welcome that are outside of the hurricane “danger zone.” Let someone outside of your immediate family unit know where these 3 places are and give them phone numbers for each location.
Get a map and figure out the best and safest route out of the evacuation zone. Be prepared to drive at least 20 to 50 miles away from the affected area.
Listen to local news and contact local authorities, if needed, to find out information on road closures, contraflow, etc.
Gather telephone numbers for police and other emergency agencies.
Stay tuned to your local radio news station or TV stations for evacuation updates and instructions. Be ready to evacuate as soon as your local government calls for it.
Unplug all major appliances.
Turn off the main electrical breaker and/or gas line to your home.
Cut off your home’s main water line.
If you have time, elevate your furniture and other important items in your home in case it floods.
Secure all outdoor items that could break windows in case of high winds.
Tape up your windows to prevent shattering and make sure they are locked.
2. Prepare your hurricane supply kit.
3. Prepare your home for high winds and possible wind damage.
Install hurricane shutters or plywood panels to each window of your home.
Remove all diseased, dead or damaged limbs from surrounding trees. This can help your trees be more wind resistant and prevent damage to your home.
