Hurricane Supply Kit
With hurricane season in full swing, it is important as ever to make sure you have all the supplies you need in case of an evacuation. Tropical storms and hurricanes can often develop with little to no notice, so it's important to make a plan and be ready. Below is a list of items experts recommend you have in your hurricane supply kit. Make sure you have enough of each item for a 3 to 5 day evacuation period.
- Flashlight
- Extra batteries
- Bottled water (At least 3 gallons of water per day, per person)
- Battery-powered radio
- Battery-powered lantern
- First aid kit and medications
- I.D.
- Map of evacuation routes
- Non-perishable canned food
- High energy foods (Peanut butter, jelly, crackers, etc)
- Utility knife
- Tape
- Compass
- Plastic sheeting and/or tarpaulin
- Garbage bags
- Protective clothing/rainwear
- Change of clothes for each member of household
It is also important to take vital records with you if an evacuation is ordered. We learned from Hurricane Katrina that recovering these records after a big storm can be hard to do and impossible in many cases. It’s always better to just bring them along with you to a safe area. Be sure to secure them in a portable, waterproof container that can easily fit in your vehicle. These items include:
- Driver’s license or I.D. card
- Social Security card
- Proof of residence
- All insurance policy information
- Birth and marriage certificates
- Wills, deeds and copies of recent tax returns
